Desktop GIS
ArcGIS Desktop is a collection of software products that runs on standard desktop computers and is used to create, import, edit, query, map, analyze and publish geographic information. It allows you to examine relationships, test predictions and ultimately, make better decisions.
A single, consistent user interface
All ArcGIS Desktop products share a common architecture, so users working with any of these GIS desktops can share their work with others. Maps, data, symbology, map layers, geoprocessing models, custom tools and interfaces, reports and metadata can be accessed interchangeably.
This means that all GIS users in an organization can benefit from using a single, consistent user interface and set of functionality and data formats, to minimize the need to learn and deploy several different products.
ArcGIS Desktop includes ArcView, ArcEditor and ArcInfo. Each product provides additional GIS functionality as you move from ArcView to ArcEditor to ArcInfo.
With optional ArcGIS Desktop extensions, you can add more capabilities through specialized tools that let you perform extended tasks like raster geoprocessing, 3D analysis and map publishing.
